Clare Therese Gray is an artist, illustrator and pattern designer based in rural Hampshire. Working primarily by hand in paint, ink and pencil, she creates decorative artwork inspired by the natural world, historic interiors and the changing landscape around her.
Her work has a distinctly British character, bringing together loose, expressive mark-making with a love of intricate botanical detail, pattern and colour. Flowers, foliage, birds and other familiar elements of the countryside recur throughout her work, reimagined across paintings, textiles, wallpaper, ceramics, stationery and objects for the home.
Clare studied Painting before completing the Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School, where she developed a practice rooted in both observational and imaginative drawing. She has since collaborated with brands and makers internationally, creating original artwork and patterns for interiors, fashion, publishing and lifestyle collections.
Alongside her commercial work, Clare is increasingly exploring decorative art for interiors, from hand-painted furniture and ceramics to murals, wallpaper and bespoke pieces. Her recent move to a Georgian farmhouse on a working Hampshire farm has become a natural extension of her creative practice, providing both inspiration and a setting in which to experiment with colour, pattern and decoration.
Clare is also the author and illustrator of several books celebrating painting and the natural world, and shares her studio practice, interiors and rural life with a community of more than 150,000 followers on Instagram.
